Why Change It?

Because the 1st amendment of the constitution protects us from the government creating a law respecting the establishment of any religion. As an atheist, I think it would be wrong also for the government to declare an acceptance of atheism. Religion is a topic that they government of my great nation should not comment on. Remember why people even came here from Europe, they wanted to worship in their own way. I want you to be able to worship in your own way as I am able to not worship at all. I do not want to take anything away from you, rather, I want to protect YOU as well as me from being told what religion you have to follow in order to be a "Real American".

I don't want to destroy your values or remove your religion from your lives. I want to remove religion from government, it has no business there. I will never tell you to not display your cross to demonstrate your faith, neither you nor I have the right to not be offended.

As far as "In God We Trust" on our money, yes that needs to change also. This is simply not an accurate depiction of our entire demographic. If you want to change it to something like "In God we trust, most of us anyway" it would at least be more accurate, but still IMHO a violation of the first amendment.

I like my guns. I think we should all have them if we choose to. I belong to the NRA, I get 2 or 3 e-mails and phone call or two a day begging me to vote for McCain. I have been telling people that the 2nd Amendment is a very important issue to me. However, it is not the biggest issue in this presidential race. The economy, the war, the rampant violation of civil (and human) rights, and the pushing of Christianity by the GOP....those are bigger issues to me. I will be voting for Obama on Tuesday. I expect Obama to be anti-gun, but THAT is where the NRA needs to responsibly spend their resources....educate people that the 2nd Amendment is worded simply enough that it doesn't require interpretation. Dan Cooper, founder of Cooper Firearms obviously can see that firearms aren't the biggest issue...he's supporting Obama. Of course a bunch of shortsighted rednecks threw a fit, and he stepped down to protect his employees.

It has survived from about the 4th century, so it's still going to show about 200 years worth of changes from the original writings. It paints a little bit less gay version of Jesus, and more hatred towards the Jews for killing him. It should hopefully succeed in allowing more people to realize that this is all fiction after all.

Sarah Palin doesn't have a clue about what the founding fathers had in mind. Ed Brayton points out in a blog post how she misquoted several non-christian founding fathers to make it sound as if the USA was built as a Christian nation.

I was at the bank today to perform a wire transfer. It isn't rocket science, it's a simple transaction. Well, I will not name the teller, but today I think was her first day for doing some things in life, namely spelling. I'm rattling off info to her and I say the word Connecticut..."How do you spell that?" Well, okay, that is one of the tougher states to spell. So I start in telling her CONN...ECT....ICUT... "Hold on a sec..CON..?" NECT..I..."Hang on, CONNE what?" CONNE.....C......T......I.....C....U...T. This I found quite annoying, and it did nothing for my faith in the human race. On down the road there was another word, nearly a common spelling, but with one letter different. I don't think it would've mattered, she couldn't have spelled that one either. 5 Minutes later (about 20 minutes in) there was another short word, just as much trouble. Holy Shit! By the time we had the form all filled out, I didn't have a scrap of confidence that the info was on the form properly. I asked for a blank form and I'd take it home to 'double check' the data and bring it back. Needless to say, I'll be going to a different branch to complete the transaction in the morning.

I've heard a lot of stuff lately about The Golden Compass. Initially I heard that it was written by an atheist and that the zealots were pissed off. That very day I ordered the set off of eBay. It seems that even CNN Money is offended by this thing. You know what pisses me off? All the people who ruined the Chronicles of Narnia by drawing Christian parallels to it and this claiming it as theirs. I have never read that series and seriously doubt that I will now. But since the zealots are who they are, I am reading His Dark Materials. I think it is a perfectly acceptable use of fiction against fiction. The book has no bearing on reality....just like the bible.

For what it's worth, I have finished reading The Golden Compass as of yesterday. I found the story interesting, but I am not particularly fond of the writing style. There are a whole lot of details that have been left out. To me it feels like watching a movie after reading the book. I will probably still watch the movie as it will probably be entertaining...I will most likely take my kids to see it.

I've been paying close attention to politics as of late. I haven't blogged much about it as I have come up with a new idea. The whole thing is smoke and mirrors. I've been telling people that I don't think Bush will leave office, I now think I am wrong. We elected a Democratic Congress so we could get his tyranny stopped, that sure worked huh? It is plain to see that they are perfectly content to let the Bush do as he has been doing. They are letting the American public suffer at the hand of this dictator for another whole year to let the elections clear it up. See, we will have a fresh election this coming year with no incumbent running for President. It's almost a win-win situation. If a Republican gets in office or a Democrat, the whole world is going to say "Whew! Glad we're rid of Bush!" Everyone will be happy on some level about the outcome, but it's all an illusion. The power isn't held by the people in office. It's held behind the scenes, by people we may not suspect. It's been that way for a very long time. Is it the Illuminati, the Federal Reserve, Catholics, Jews? Who the hell knows. I don't think we'll ever know who is running things, but I'll bet it's the same people responsible for propagating lies about religion. Government is power and religion is power, even money is power. Maybe I've read one conspiracy theory too many, maybe I'm paranoid, maybe I feel defeated. I've come to one conclusion: All of the political activism in the world is not going to change this. Write all your letters, hold all your signs, make your phone calls....keep running on the treadmill, notice how you never get anywhere? I'm not saying that there aren't ways to change it, but I'm not about to suggest any methods as I do not know what will work. All I know is that I know what WILL NOT work, it's what we've been doing for 50 years. A few hundred years ago, some brilliant men came together thinking these very same things, and they pulled together what would be probably the best of all possible thoughts and they called it The Constitution of the United States. Miami Reporter Arrested

Jeff Weinsier, a television reporter in Miami, was arrested for being on a sidewalk near a school. The police officers asked him to kindly move across the street, claiming that was a lawful order. He disagreed, but went across the street, call the police PIO and was told that it was a public place and he could be there. Of course they cops didn't care and arrested him for disobeying an unlawful order. Police officers need to get educated on what they are allowed to do and say instead of thinking the badge gives them absolute authority. So far the badge doesn't...of course that will change as soon as King George has is way I suppose.

As a disclaimer, these guys are only my friends because they are good cops. I have worked closely with cops who have the "do what I tell you 'cause I'm a cop" attitude, and therefore I have never cultivated a friendship with them.

I have heard a second-hand report from a friend that got hired as a cop, wanting to help people. He went to the academy where they taught him to exert his authority at every opportunity and show those citizens who is in charge. He quit...good guy.

Up north of us somewhere in Canada, there is a man that has made a few mistakes in life. He has indeed done some things that I personally find reprehensible.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity, pleaded guilty in May to committing incest and sexually assaulting his daughter over a 14-year period.
He also pleaded guilty to committing bestiality with dogs and a horse over a nearly 16-year period, forcing his daughter to commit bestiality with a dog and trying to get the victim's younger sister to sexually touch him.

The kicker is that they are having trouble deciding if he should be given a dangerous offender tag or not.

Now, down this way in New Hampshire, a 17 year old Boy had sex with his 15 year old girlfriend, consensually. This is natural, this is normal. The girl's father hears about it and promptly runs down to the school and beats the living shit out of the kid.

The boy suffered cuts and bruises and received two stitches to his face. The father was charged with simple assault.

Detective Lou Chatel said the boy will be charged as an adult and could face up to a year in jail.

This grown man is getting simple battery for causing bodily injury to a minor, while the minor is being charged as an adult for sex with another minor. This will probably brand him for life as a sex offender.

On another note, I supported some independent artists today. I went to CDBaby.com and ordered 3 CDs from artists I've never heard of before, with shipping I spent $20. They have a boatload of CDs for $5 if you check it out. I feel a whole lot better paying the artists for their work rather than letting a major music label get any cut of it. They were really appreciative too, their email said this:

The touch-and-run game and any other form of chasing was banned this year at Discovery Canyon Campus’ elementary school by administrators who say it fuels schoolyard disputes.

Are we next to mark out a small 10 foot square area where the children can play alone? Maybe fence it in...walls? I think schoolyard disputes are necessary for our children to grow into productive adults. It's the way they are going to learn how to handle disputes. Do we really want our next generation to learn about settling differences when they are big and strong enough to do real damage?

The Past, Present, and Future

I recently watched Zeitgeist, a movie that discusses the ways that mankind has been manipulated throughout the ages by religion and politics, for money. This movie makes a compelling argument that you have been a pawn in a large game controlled by the system that has been in place for eons. If what this film says is true, and I tend to believe it, then changes in our little corner of the world may not be enough. We may need the whole world to unite as one to fight it off, which creates an interesting irony of it's own.
